Luke's Groomsmen Trip, Buffalo River, Arkansas
Переглядів 1654 роки тому
My good friend Luke got married in the summer of 2016, and a couple months prior, I joined him and our buds for a float down the Buffalo, sleeping on the riverside, and hiking in the hills. Cameron and I managed to swamp a canoe (which we pulled out with 7 guys), Luke opened up his shin with a hatchet while cutting wood, and Daniel sliced his palm while scrambling on some rocks at the base of a...
Bike Touring the Katy Trail [VIDEO]
Переглядів 2,9 тис.8 років тому
Me and a buddy, Erik Gunderson (Gundy), rode our bikes from Clinton, Missouri to St. Louis, MO over the course of 4 days. It rained, it was chilly, it was hot, we ate at gas stations, we ate at restaurants, we laughed, we cried (not really), but seriously it was a fun trip with a friend that I don't spend enough time with :/ Comment if you have any questions about riding the trail yourself! :)
Colorado Trail Thru-Hike 2013 [VIDEO]

Re-uploaded due to a muted video. This was one of the most life-changing experiences I have had so far in my life. The Colorado Trail is beautiful, challenging, rainy, snowy, hail-y, and so much more, but it is so worth it! I met some amazing people, saw incredible scenery, and ate alot of Clif Bars! Please please please, if you have any questions at all regarding gear, logistics, life-stuff, j...
Microadventure with Friends: Lawrence, Kansas (December)
Переглядів 1808 років тому
Inspired by the microadventure movement made popular by Alastair Humphreys, me and 4 very dear friends gathered out in the woods at a confluence of two rivers to share memories, laugh, and stare at the stars. Also to argue which way Lawrence was and discuss future life goals. It's truly amazing to know how much fun a night-time bike ride and wild camping can be: all before school started at 9:3...

The best summer of my life. Hands down. No questions. I rode with 32 amazing people from Charleston, South Carolina to Santa Cruz, California. Throughout the 82 day adventure we had 61 riding days, 17 build days, and 4 days off. We pedaled through farmlands, mountains, sand dunes (in Oregon.. whaaat), rolling hills, and valleys. I am so incredibly lucky to have had the fortune to spend my summe...

Bright Angel Trail UP & DOWN Day-Hike

This is an older video when me and my friend Phil took a stroll down Bright Angel Trail to the Colorado River and back up. It was a pretty awesome hike and not as physically draining as i thought it was going to be. If you are in good shape and don't carry an unnecessary amount of weight, you should be fine to go down and up in one day. We started at 10am on the rim and returned at 4:10pm or so...

      Thanks for the kind comment. The UA-cam powers that be didn't like the songs that were included, so they eventually deleted it. I changed the song in question and reuploaded it for folks to enjoy; so I'm happy to hear that someone has already gotten some enjoyment out of it being available for viewing again :)

    Im planning on doing segment 22 through to Durango and taking the train back to Silverton and backtrack to Sprink Creek pass (beginning of segment 22). Is that the most scenic area? I would try to whole thing but the logistics of getting back to the beginning are too complicated. How many miles did you cover a day on average? And how did your legs feel each morning?

    • @1974HondaCB350F
      @1974HondaCB350F 5 років тому

      Hey! In my opinion, yes, that section is incredibly beautiful and is my favorite part of the entire CT (having backpacked and bikepacked it once each). Daily mileage really depends on your endurance and location along the CT, as there are quick and slow parts of the trail. If you're in decent shape and used to altitude, riding that section could be done in 2 long-ish days. 3 days would allow for a more relaxed pace / longer breaks. And my legs were always a bit tired, but it was totally fine :)

      It was very flat. It follows an old rail line, mostly along the Missouri River, so there is very little elevation gain throughout the route. So get used to sitting for extended periods of time (there's no need to get out of your saddle for steep climbs. There are none, lol!). But overall the experience was very fun and one I'm glad that me and my friend did. Some great memories there. Thanks for the comment, John!

      I was in the same position as you actually. This was my first bikepacking trip and I simply used all of my backpacking gear. I'd encourage you to take a short-ish trip (2-4 days) without investing too much into bikepacking specific gear. This will help you see how much you enjoy the bikepacking activity. If you have enough gear to backpack, then you have enough gear to bikepack (assuming you have a bicycle lol). As far as tips go, I'd say just plan a weekend trip and do it! It'll be worth it I promise :)

    This might sound weird, but I just spent 25 minutes riding my exercise bike, my 60" TV a meter and a half from my face, playing this video. There might have been weed involved, but I cannot comment on that at this time. You see, I used to mountain bike a ton, but as life would have it, I don't do that anymore. So I was wondering what it would do to my brain and how strong an illusion I could get it into. It was fucking awesome :) I was banking, standing, rattling... totally got into it. So thanks for the video. Made my evening ;) (edit: diction)

    Thanks for the great video. I'm hoping to hike this summer 18, but it will be my first long distance hike. I'm going to be getting that CT handbook you discussed in your other video, but I've never done a hike needing resupplies. Is it relatively easy to get into towns (because that seems like the most sketch part as I try plan this out in my mind). Also, I notice most of the trail seems to be pretty well defined (and I know you had a couple of times where you went the wrong way for a bit), but was it for the most part, fairly easy to determine where to go?

    • @1974HondaCB350F
      @1974HondaCB350F 7 років тому

      Hey Chris! Thanks for your kind words :) I'll list some answers below for ya: 1.) Getting into towns was actually one of the pretty fun parts about thru hiking. I had never hitch-hiked before, but I never had a negative experience (other than waiting up to an hour at US-50 highway). And also, if you are still very nervous about it, find a hiking buddy on the trail and see if they are heading to the same town. Hitching in pairs or groups is always safer (and fun!). 2.) Yes, the CT is incredibly well marked and easy to follow. As long as you keep your head up and notice the signs, you will be fine. Both times when I got turned around its because I was staring at my feet and zoned out. There are many trail junctions, but almost always there is a sign :) And if there isn't, the CT handbook has turn by turn directions for the entire length. It's an awesome handbook. Very useful. Hopefully that helps! Don't hesitate to ask more questions! The CT is awesome and I hope you experience it in full :) ~ Jake

    Terrific video. Awesome music. You ended the trail with different friends (and a different tent) than what you started with - was this a thru-hike or segment? Also, I'm curious to know in what ways it was life-changing? I really appreciate the work you put into this!

    • @1974HondaCB350F
      @1974HondaCB350F 7 років тому

      Hey Kirk! Thanks for the kind words. And good noticing the different friends and tent haha! So the guys I started with ended up calling it when we were in Breckenridge. I continued solo for a couple more days and met the guy (Jesse) and the girl (Laine) later that week. It was awesome to have a new trail family and hike / camp together. It honestly couldn't have worked out any better. This explains the tent change: my buddy and I were sharing the load of an REI half dome tent. Once he called it quits, I learned it was too big to fit it in my pack (46L Osprey). So we took a few buses to arrive in Dillon, CO where I bought that Big Agnes tent (still use it often). It was expensive but definitely worth it :) Also, yes, this was a thru-hike for me. The trip was life-changing in a few ways. Meeting people on trail and sharing stories and laughs were among the highlights of that hike. Overcoming difficult days where you feel pretty down. Experiencing the beauty of the trail and taking in those high moments. Being able to just sit and look and realize how lucky I was to have the means to take a month off and just hike was incredible. It's an experience that I'll never forget and I still think about it often! Thanks Kirk, let me know if you have any more questions. ~ Jake

      I couldn't have said it any better. Love the story, especially the part of your buds calling it quits. My buddy and I started out and then met a gal in Leadville who was hiking solo and was a day behind us as she came off at the first Leadville exit. So, she left town a dy early and we met back up the following day. All was going well and we get to Twin Lakes and have camp set up, get a fire going, you know the drill. Well, along comes a dude walking into camp and asked if he could throw down under a tree next to camp. The gal that was now with us replied, as long as you will roast marshmallows with us. He cracked up and said well hell yes. Good times man good times. BTW we all stuck together for the remainder of the trip and are still friends today.

    Hello! I love your vids! They are beyond helpful for my planning. I just have 2 questions for you. 1) How many pairs of clothes did you bring. This should be my 1st time backpacking but clothing worn & carried seem very minimal. Is this normal? 2) I want to thru hike as well, and spend a few nights at hostels. But I cant find anything cheaper that $75. 3) I should be getting the CT guide soon, Was it much use to you? Thanks a bunch!

    • @1974HondaCB350F
      @1974HondaCB350F 7 років тому

      Hey Jean! 1.) I only brought what I showed in the video. That was two pairs of underwear, one pair of shorts, one t-shirt, one wool long sleeve, down jacket, and a rain jacket. There were a couple accessories like a beanie and wool socks, but that is up to you. This clothing list is pretty typical I'd say, but bring whatever makes you comfortable. You can always mail things home if you don't use them. 2.) Every hostel I stayed in was $10-20. I promise you that you will never be charged $75 for one night in a hostel. (assuming you are okay with the bunk rooms and are not requesting a private room. If you are, then $75 may make sense). 3.) The guide is good, but the CT Databook is definitely more helpful when you're on the trail. It tells you directions, water availability (very important), campsites, etc. I would highly recommend bringing this booklet with you. It is pocket sized. Thanks! ~ Jake

  • @PrimevalFan100
    @PrimevalFan100 7 років тому

    Hey, cool video! I just wanted to ask what you would recommend: Biking or hiking the CT since you did both? Because I'm not from the US I can only do one during my time there next year, and I was wondering what would be the best for this trail. I really like those bikepacking videos, but I would have to rent the equipment and technical failures, like the broken pump, could end it rather easily, whereas with hiking it's "just" your body against nature. Or am I completly wrong with that mindset?

    • @1974HondaCB350F
      @1974HondaCB350F 7 років тому

      Hey there! If you have the time to hike the entire trail, I would recommend doing that instead of biking it. This is completely personal opinion, I just want to point that out. But I found that biking it was 50% pushing my bike and 20% surviving descents. There are definitely sections that are amazing and worth it, but overall, I enjoyed hiking the CT so much more. For you, it is much simpler to just bring a backpack and start. It is less frustrating (in my opinion) than biking the trail. It feels like more of a natural way to interact with the environment. You don't need to detour the wilderness areas (some of the best parts of the CT). You meet more people who are going the same pace as you and it is possible to become very close to those you hike with (conversation while thru-biking is pretty tough to have). Overall, hiking and biking the CT are so different from each other. If I had the time to do only one, I would hike it again in a heartbeat :) Hope that helped. ~ Jake

    Love Bike Packing, I do it all n Florida. But I feel like it would be so much enjoyable in Colorado with my mountain bike.
